How does IR3535® repel insects?
IR3535® works as an insect repellent through a mechanism that’s still being researched, but here’s what we know today: IR3535® appears to work mainly by interfering with insects’ smell receptors. It doesn’t kill insects but rather makes you “invisible” or unappealing to them. This is caused by disrupting their ability to detect the chemical signals they normally use to find hosts such as carbon dioxide, lactic acid, and other compounds in human sweat and breath.
The compound likely binds to or blocks specific receptors on insects’ antennae that would normally detect human odors. When these receptors are blocked or confused, mosquitoes and other biting insects have difficulty locating and landing on you. It’s thought to create a sort of “vapor barrier” around the skin that masks the attractive scents.
IR3535® is structurally similar to the naturally occurring amino acid β-alanine, which may be why it interacts effectively with insect chemoreceptors. It’s been shown to repel mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies, and other insects for several hours after application.
The exact molecular interactions are still being studied. Insect repellent research is surprisingly complex because different insects may have slightly different receptor types and sensitivities. But the key takeaway is that it works by sensory disruption rather than toxicity, which is why it’s considered safe for human use and has been approved by regulatory agencies worldwide.
