How does DEET repel insects?

DEET primarily works by jamming insects’ olfactory receptors. It essentially “confuses” their sense of smell. It activates certain olfactory neurons that make it difficult for insects to detect attractive human odors. Some research suggests DEET may also have a direct repellent effect where insects find the smell unpleasant and avoid it. It’s highly volatile, creating a protective vapor around treated skin. So both masking and active repulsion make DEET a very effective insect repellent.

DEET is also highly effective against malaria mosquitoes (Anopheles species) and has been the “gold standard” for decades, due to several factors. It has a long history and extensive testing. DEET has been used since the 1940’s and 50’s, so there’s decades of field data proving its effectiveness. Also DEET comes in high concentration options providing very long-lasting protection. Its dual mechanism (masking + active repulsion) does provide robust protection against a wide variety of mosquitoes and also against ticks.
